The World Diamond Council (also known during its prototype period as the International Diamond Council) is an organisation consisting of representatives from diamond manufacturing and diamond trading companies. The Council was set up in July 2000 to examine ways to reduce the number of conflict diamonds entering the diamond market.
At almost the same time national governments also took steps to eradicate trade of conflict diamonds by drawing up the Kimberley Process which governs how diamonds are obtained and traded. The World Diamond Council has representation on the Kimberley Process’s working groups and is influential in determining the implementation of the Process.
The Council was set up in July 2000 after a joint meeting of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (representing all the world’s significant diamond trading centres) and the International Diamond Manufacturers Association (representing significant manufacturers).
The Council is currently chaired by Eli Izhakoff. There are eight other operating officers. In addition the Council has around 70 members representing jewellers, traders and manufacturers (a full list of members). There are observers from the governments of Belgium (Antwerp is the largest diamond trading centre), South Africa (the largest diamond producing country) and Israel.
10 committees (Steering, Technical, Finance, Banking, United States Legislative, Legal, Information and Research, Producers, International Government and United Nations Liaison and Membership) report to the council.
There are Five Laboratories working to the IDC rules they are, 1. The Certificates Department of the Antwerp Diamond High Council HRD, Belgium; 2. The Swedish Testing Institute, Stockholm, Sweden; 3. The Jewellery Council of South Africa Laboratory SAJC, Johannesburg, South Africa; 4. The Diamant Prueflabor, Idar Oberstein, Germany. 5. The Diamond Certification Laboratory of Australia DCLA, Sydney, Australia
The Black Watch is an electronic wristwatch launched in September 1975 by Sinclair Radionics, costing £17.95 in kit form and £24.95 ready-built. The product was beset by technical problems including a battery life of just 10 days, variable accuracy and a very sensitive integrated circuit which could be rendered useless by a static shock from a nylon shirt. In spite of this, Sinclair’s advertising still claimed:
- If that sounds technical, think of the outcome: a watch with no moving parts, a watch with nothing to go wrong, a watch which gives accuracy never achievable by the most precise mechanical engineering.[1]
Henri Lemoine (fl. 1905–1908) was a French fraudster who claimed to be able to produce synthetic diamonds.
In 1905 Lemoine contacted Sir Julius Wernher, British banker and one of the governors of De Beers Diamond Mines. He said he had discovered a process to produce gem-sized diamonds from coal and agreed to sell his invention if Wernher would be willing to invest to further his research. He invited Wernher to his laboratory in Paris to witness the process. Wernher took Francis Oats, a De Beers executive, and two other associates with him.
Lemoine invited his guests in and left the room; moments later he reappeared naked, to prove that he was not concealing any diamonds in his clothing. He mixed a number of substances including iron filings and coal into a small crucible, showed the mixture to his guests, and placed it into a furnace in the center of the room.
After fifteen minutes, Lemoine removed the hot crucible and let it cool. Then he picked a pair of tweezers and took out about twenty small, well-formed diamonds. Oats examined the diamonds and demanded that Lemoine repeat the procedure. He did so successfully.
Wernher offered to pay Lemoine to develop his invention if he would keep it a secret. Lemoine agreed and promised him an option to buy his secret formula, which he deposited in a London bank deposit box.
For the next three years, Sir Julius sent Lenoine a total of £64,000. Lemoine promised to build a factory to duplicate diamonds; actually he just took a picture of an electric plant in southern France and sent it to Sir Julius.
In 1908 a Persian jeweller revealed that he had sold Lemoine small diamonds that matched the description of the diamonds Lemoine had shown during the first demonstration. Lemoine was indicted for fraud.
In court, Lemoine continued to claim that his process was genuine but was unable to duplicate it for the judges. The secret formula was unsealed by a court order; it was a mixture of powdered carbon and sugar. Before the court could agree on his guilt, Lemoine left the country for parts unknown.
Tidal diamonds are symbols on British admiralty charts that indicate the direction and speed of tidal streams.
The symbols consist of a letter of the Roman alphabet in a rhombus, printed in purple ink. On any particular chart each tidal diamond will have a unique letter starting from “A” and continuing alphabetically.
Somewhere on the chart, generally on land, will be a Tidal Diamond table. This contains a grid of thirteen rows and three columns for each Diamond. The rows are the hours of the tidal cycle showing the 6 hours from low water to high water, high water itself and the 6 hours from high water to low water. The columns show the bearing of the tidal stream and its speed, in knots, at both spring tide and neap tide. The times on the table are related to the high water of the Standard Port displayed on the table.
An alternative to a tidal diamond is a tidal atlas which are often more accurate and easier to use (if available).

There are a limited number of commercially viable diamond mines currently operating in the world. Diamonds are also mined alluvially over disperse areas, where diamonds have been eroded out of the ground and deposited by water or weather action. There is also at least one example of a non-commercial diamond mine (Crater of Diamonds State Park).

“Diamonds and Pearls” is the title track to Prince and the New Power Generation’s 1991 hit album. The song is an upbeat ballad, given a rock and roll edge with guitar and heavy drumming. The song also features the powerful vocals of NPG member Rosie Gaines. The ballad is an expression of love and not lust, as is the theme on the some of the other singles from the album. The song was Top 10 hit, reaching #3 in the U.S., and the top spot on the R&B charts.
The B-side is a mix of excerpts of other Diamonds and Pearls tracks that serves to promote the album. There was no extended version of the song released. The U.K. B-side included some of the mixes on the “Cream” maxi-single.

The Baken diamond mine is a diamond mine located along the lower Orange River in South Africa. The mine is owned and operated by Trans Hex. The central processing plant has been operational at Baken since 2001.
In 2004 the Baken mine produced 88,063 carats (17.6126 kg); average stone size for the year was 1.29 carats (258 g). Notable stones from production in 2004 included a 78.9 carat (15.78 g), D color flawless diamond that sold for over $1.8 million USD; and a 27.67 carat (5.534 g) pink diamond sold for over $1.0 million USD.
Probable reserves are 21.2 million cubic meters of ore at an ore grade of 1.69 carats per 100 cubic meters (3.38 mg/m³). There is a waste rock overburden of about 33 million cubic meters.
Nene Park is the home ground of Rushden & Diamonds football club. Situated in Irthlingborough, Northamptonshire, England, along the bank of the River Nene, the stadium holds 6,441 with 4,641 seated and 1,800 standing.
The stadium was built in 1969 as the home of Irthlingborough Diamonds, after the land was bought from the water board. In 1978, Nene Park became the first United Counties League stadium to have floodlights, which were officially turned on by Bobby Robson. He was watched by future Rushden & Diamonds manager Brian Talbot, who was still in his playing career at the time.
In 1992, when Irthlingborough Diamonds merged with Rushden Town to form Rushden & Diamonds, Nene Park was extensively redeveloped. This saw the stadium torn down and rebuilt under the financial guidance of Max Griggs. The new stadium also has conference facilities in the Diamond Centre, which features three hospitality rooms and was opened by Prince Charles in 1995.
An unusual feature of the stadium are the model owls in each corner, to deter birds from nesting in the roof.
The Chopard Diamond award (or simply the Diamond award) is given by the World Music Awards to artists who have sold over 100 million albums during their career. This award is occasionally confused with the previously created RIAA certification of “Diamond”, which represents the sale of over ten million copies of an album and was created in 1999, whereas the Chopard Diamond award was created in 2001.
Nathan George Horwitt was an American designer who lived in the 1940s. He is most renowned for his “museum watch” created for the Swiss watch company Movado, which featured a black dial with a single gold circle situated at 12 o’clock. The watch was intended to suggest the sundial, the most ancient form of keeping time.
